What is salt used for?

Salt is one of the most abundant minerals on the planet and an incredibly important substance whose number of uses is estimated to more than 14,000. Much more than a food enhancer and preserver, salt is used across different sectors and is an essential element in the manufacturing of a wide range of products.

In Europe, the chlor-alkali and synthetic soda ash industries are the main applications for salt (53%). A proportion of 15% of salt is used for de-icing, 12% for food/feed, 5% for water softening and the remaining 15% for other applications.
