International standard for table salt

EUsalt supports the Standard for Food Grade Salt issued by the Codex Alimentarius or “Food Code”. The Codex Alimentarius is a collection of standards, guidelines and codes of practice, which ensure that food is safe and can be traded.

The Standard for Food Grade Salt applies to salt used as an ingredient of food, both for direct sale to the consumer and for food manufacture. It applies also to salt used as a carrier of food additives and/or nutrients.

EUsalt analytical standards

The analytical standards for salt developed by EUsalt are referred to in the Codex Standard for Food Grade Salt. Each analytical standard provides methods to determine the various substances and contaminants in salt. For this purpose, EUsalt carried out a series of inter-lab ring tests.

These analytical standards are freely available for download and their wide use by all players in the salt sector is encouraged in order to achieve harmonisation in defining salt quality.
