Salt is a vital element in the daily nutrition of people...

The first thought when hearing “salt” is most likely associated with the kitchen table salt which is used in food preparation and cooking. This type of salt is referred by experts as food grade salt and plays a crucial role in maintaining human health.

However, the human body is not capable of producing its own salt and depends on the various sources of salt in food to ensure its necessary daily intake. Adults need 4 to 5 grams of common salt per day and with balanced nutrition, these quantities are contained in meals.

Furthermore, salt is a carrier of iodine and fluoride, which are essential elements in maintaining good health. The human body needs iodine to regulate the thyroid function and fluorine to prevent tooth decay.

Salt has also an important technological role in the manufacturing of many foods. In addition to its well-known function as a preserver and flavor enhancer, it is also fundamental to the taste and texture of lots of foods such as bread and cheese.

Only about 7% of the entire salt production in Europe is food grade salt.

... and animals

Animals also need salt to stay healthy. The right salt intake ensures their growth and strengthens their immune and reproductive systems. Often agricultural animals and commercial livestock do not receive enough salt from foraging and other feeds and therefore it is necessary to supplement their diet with salt.
