EUsalt welcomes the European Parliament's veto on the proposed delegated act for organic salt

Brussels, 11th July 2023

EUsalt, the association representing European and global crystallised salt producers, welcomes the positive outcome of the voting of the European Parliament on the proposed delegated act amending Regulation (EU) 2018/848 regarding the production of organic sea salt and other organic salts for food and feed.

468 members of the European Parliament voted for a veto on the abovementioned Draft Delegated Act, therefore, objecting to the inclusion of salt in the Organic Regulation. According to EU law, after a delegated act by the European Commission has been adopted, the European Parliament has the ability to veto an adopted act and revoke it. Today’s action is one of a kind as it has only happened a few times in EU history.

Already on 28 June, the AGRI Committee of European Parliament (EP) adopted the objection to the Commission Delegated Regulation (with 34 votes in favour and 7 against) confirming that the inclusion of salt, a mineral, in the Act would have created discriminations among salt producers and countries.

Being salt a mineral, its inclusion in the Organic Regulation would have confused consumers, contradicted the very principles of the Farm to Fork strategy and local supply chains as well as excluded more than 90% of salt producers from organic production.

EUsalt and its members would like to thank the Members of the European Parliament for the positive vote.
