Salt availability on the European market is essential

EUsalt underlines the importance of salt in the management of the COVID-19 pandemic and the need for it to be continually available on the market.

Salt is one of the most important basic chemicals being used in numerous applications in the medical, pharmaceutical and chemical sectors. In addition to its flavor enhancer ability, salt preserves food and prevents spoilage. The well-being of people and animals depends on an adequate intake of salt or salt fortified with essential nutrients.

Salt is therefore an essential commodity and its availability on the European market must be ensured at all times. Despite the current challenges, salt producers are committed to ensure continuity of production while taking extra safety steps to protect their workforce and collaborators. Yet, the European salt producers are currently faced with issues regarding the cross-border transport of their products.

EUsalt welcomes the “Guidelines for border management measures to protect health and ensure the availability of goods and essential services” published by the European Commission where food and medical supplies are classified as essential goods. However, more work needs to be done to ensure smooth European-wide delivery of this essential product.
